Reindeer Manor opened for its first season in 1974 by the Red Oak Voulenteer Fire Department. Over the next few years several other charitable organizations operated the manor as a fund raiser until 1981 when Boy Scout Troop 1 out of Duncanville took over operations and has been running it ever sense. Throughout those years there have been many high points and low points, but overall the haunted house is still going strong and has no intentions to ever end its legacy of terrifying fun in Red Oak.
Who We Are
Reindeer Manor not only benefits Troop 1, we are actually planned, built, and run by the boys as well. In Scouting, boys (and girls in Venturing) are expected to do more than simply participate in activities preplanned and carried out by their adult advisors. They are expected to come up with the activity, plan the logistics, and execute the plan to make it become a reality. At Reindeer Manor they do exactly that. The Steering Committee is simply a group of adults who make sure the kids dont bite off more than they can chew as well as ensure the quality of the show we put on and provide guidance and training so they can complete the plans they make. Similar to a teaching hospital, we like to think of ourselves as a teaching haunted house. The kids in the Crew and Troop learn valuable life skills such as sticktoitiveness, teamwork, managing a team of workers, and the satisfaction of a job well done. Indeed, in addition to life skills they actually learn job and trade skills as well. Skills such as welding, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, electrical, and any other trade that is in high demand is in need while working on the haunt through the three months of off season workdays it takes to get the attractions ready for October. Many of the kids who have worked at the Haunted House over the years have gone on to do great things from NASA scientists to military commanders to enturpraneurs and every one of them learned some of the skills at Reindeer Manor which made them successful in their adult lives.
Who We Benefit
Boy Scout Troop 1 and Venture Crew 3, both chartered by Holy Spirit Catholic Church, are the primary beneficiaries. However, many other non profits use Reindeer Manor as a fundraiser as well. A current list is below, but we have had groups such as the Red Oak Hawkettes, Maypearl High School, Rotary Clubs, Explorer Posts and many more benefit from the success of the Manor. Now groups can run midway games, provide security and even run the parking lot to raise funds at Reindeer Manor. Some of the groups benefitting in 2008 are:
